Plot summary
Major Cleve Saville, a veteran ace from World War II, comes back to combat in Korea to fly the new F-86 Sabre. Colonel Dutch Imil hands him a flight to command, and among his pilots is Lieutenant Ed Pell, a talented but brash replacement, and Lieutenant Carl Abbott, who doubts his own skill. Abbott's wife Kristina asks Saville to keep an eye on him, and Saville and Kristina fall in love.

- Wendell Hayes was called in in desperation because the production had a start date but no script: the novel was too internal to adapt, so his screenplay, which kept only the title, was wholly original.
- For the aerial sequences the production flew operational F-86 Sabres, painted F-84F Thunderstreaks with North Korean markings to stand in for MiG-15s, and used F-100 Super Sabre crash footage to depict an F-86 landing.
- Take-offs were staged at Gila Bend Air Force Auxiliary Field, chosen for its primitive appearance, mountain backdrops and room to erect rice-paddy exteriors and a gate for Suwon Air Base.
