Plot summary
Inheritance taxes have taken a toll on the English country estate of Victor, the Earl of Rhyall, and his wife Hilary, so the couple sell guided tours of the house and grow mushrooms for market. When the American oil millionaire Charles Delacro ignores a Private sign and enters their private quarters, he finds Hilary alone. He tells her he is drawn to her though she is married, and his bold manner interests her. After a walk together he asks her to lunch in London and names his hotel; she refuses, and he presses her. Victor arrives and receives Charles with elaborate politeness. Hilary books a London hairdresser appointment and tells Victor she will stay overnight with her friend Hattie Durant. Charles waits outside the hairdresser's shop.

- Cary Grant first turned down the role of Victor; his friend Rex Harrison accepted it, but dropped out right before production when his wife Kay Kendall fell gravely ill, and Grant took the part to keep filming on schedule.
- Stanley Donen originally wanted Cary Grant as the American Delacro and Rex Harrison as Victor, with Kay Kendall as Hattie; after Kendall died, Harrison quit, Grant switched to Victor, and Rock Hudson and Charlton Heston both refused the American role.
- Robert Mitchum was cast late as Charles Delacro and took third billing without complaint; Cary Grant often said this had "saved the film" and praised Mitchum's performance highly.
