Plot summary
Jeff Bailey runs a gas station in the mountain town of Bridgeport, California. Joe Stephanos pulls in and tells him Whit Sterling wants to see him at Lake Tahoe. Bailey takes his girlfriend, Ann Miller, on the drive and finally explains who he was before he came here. He had worked in New York City as a private detective, under the name Markham, alongside Jack Fisher. A gambling boss named Whit Sterling once paid him to find Kathie Moffat, Sterling's girlfriend, who had shot Sterling and made off with forty thousand dollars. The search led Bailey to Acapulco, where he met Kathie and fell for her. She owned up to the shooting but said she had taken no money.
