Arthur Hunnicutt
Biography
Arthur Hunnicutt was an American actor who specialized in old, wise, grizzled rural characters. Born in Gravelly, Arkansas, he broke into acting through stock theater and traveling shows before studying theatrical techniques at a drama school in Cleveland. After joining a theater company on Martha's Vineyard and landing Broadway roles, he developed the country persona while touring as the lead in Tobacco Road. His first film was Wildcat (1942), and after a return to the stage he resumed his screen career in 1949. He played supporting roles in The Red Badge of Courage (1951), The Lusty Men (1952), The Tall T (1957), Cat Ballou (1965), and El Dorado (1966). His performance in The Big Sky (1952) earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. He was also known for the Western television series Sugarfoot and made nearly 40 guest appearances on television.
