Rachel and the Stranger (1948) on Netflix

Plot summary

David Harvey farms the wilderness of the Northwest Territory, where he is a recent widower raising his son, Davey, alone. Women are scarce there, so Parson Jackson and his wife advise him to buy the contract of an indentured servant, Rachel, who will keep house and care for the boy. He marries her, but the marriage is in name only, since David still grieves his dead wife, Susan. Rachel finds herself unwelcome in her new home, and Davey resents her as someone meant to replace his mother. After she hears that Susan could handle a musket, Rachel decides to learn shooting in secret, thinking it may draw Davey closer and, with him, David. Then Jim Fairways, a hunter and friend of David, arrives at the farm, and his attraction to Rachel is plain.
