Plot summary
During World War II, American and British troops posted to India are already at odds, and fighting breaks out between them, when Second Lieutenant Winston fires several shots into unarmed British Staff Sergeant Quinn in front of eleven witnesses. Barney Adams, a lieutenant colonel, is assigned by General Kempton to defend Winston at the court-martial. The case is widely treated as open and shut, but the general wants a full defense so the verdict cannot be read as a gesture meant to calm the two sides before they face the enemy together. Adams also learns that a congressman related to Winston has been applying pressure.
