Plot summary
Los Angeles, 1941. Philip Marlowe is hired by Moose Malloy, newly released from a seven-year stretch for a bank robbery, to find Velma Valento, the girlfriend he has not seen since his arrest. On the street, shots fired from a passing car force Marlowe to pull Malloy to the ground. Malloy disappears after a confrontation at Florian's, the nightclub where Velma once worked. Marlowe questions the musician Tommy Ray and the club owner's widow, Jessie Florian; a photograph of Velma leads him to a woman in a sanitarium whom Malloy insists is not her. Separately, Lindsay Marriott pays Marlowe to guard him at the handover of $15,000 for a stolen jade necklace.

- Producer Elliot Kastner originally wanted Richard Burton to play Philip Marlowe in Farewell, My Lovely, having worked with him a number of times, but Burton was busy, so the producers turned to Robert Mitchum instead.
- Director Dick Richards set the film in 1941 so it could be stamped with a "time mark" by making Marlowe a baseball fan following Joe DiMaggio's hitting streak, and dropped Florida as a setting because of budgetary constraints.
- Robert Mitchum played Philip Marlowe again in the 1978 film The Big Sleep, which made him the only actor to portray the detective in two feature films.
- Farewell, My Lovely features the sole acting role of crime novelist Jim Thompson, who appears in the film as Judge Grayle.
