Plot summary
Martin Brady, an American living in Mexico, works for the Castro brothers, General Marcos and Governor Cipriano. Sent to Texas to buy rifles and ammunition for Cipriano, he breaks his leg in an accident, is treated by Dr. Stovall, and stays with Ben Sterner, the German immigrant who is selling the guns. Major Colton, who commands the nearby soldiers, asks Brady to persuade Cipriano to let his men join an expedition against Apaches in Mexico. Captain Rucker of the Texas Rangers knows why Brady fled to Mexico and offers him a place in the Rangers. Brady is drawn to Colton's wife Helen, and the rifles he bought for Cipriano have been stolen.

- While filming in Durango, Robert Mitchum and his stunt double Chuck Roberson were drinking in a cantina when two Mexicans fought; one shot the other in the face, and the wounded man came back inside and dropped dead. The incident shook Mitchum so badly that he kept his drinking to the hotel afterwards.
- Director Robert Parrish and novelist Tom Lea first asked Henry Fonda, then Gregory Peck, to take the starring role; after both declined, Robert Mitchum, who was eager to do the film, took the lead.
- When the film was released in Cuba in 1961, it set off an ideological fury because two of its Mexican bandit characters were named the Castro brothers.
