Plot summary
Captain Wade Hunnicutt is a notorious womanizer and the richest, most powerful man in his East Texas town. A jealous husband wounds him, and Wade then turns to his son Theron. Wade's wife Hannah, scornful of her husband, has raised the boy to depend on her, but Wade now wants Theron to become a man. He shows Theron hunting and other manly pursuits, with Rafe, Hunnicutt's loyal employee, watching over him. Theron admires the slightly older, self-reliant Rafe and becomes a marksman and skilled hunter, also learning about women from him. Theron's new life draws him to Libby Halstead, a girl from a respectable local family. Her father Albert disapproves, so they must meet in secret.

Husband-and-wife screenwriters Harriet Frank Jr. and Irving Ravetch created the role of Mitchum's illegitimate son and changed his wife from the novel's aging crone into a desirable though bitter woman.- Robert Mitchum won his only major acting award for Home from the Hill, when the National Board of Review named him Best Actor for this film as well as The Sundowners.
- George Hamilton was cast after MGM executives were impressed by his performance in Crime and Punishment U.S.A., and Vincente Minnelli told him he had the quality of a privileged but sensitive mama's boy rather than a tortured soul.
