Plot summary

Dan Milner, a professional gambler whose luck has run out, accepts a job that keeps him away from the United States for a year and pays $50,000. A $5,000 advance and a ticket bring him to a secluded luxury lodge on the coast of Baja California in Mexico, with the rest of his instructions to follow. His chartered flight south carries one other passenger, Lenore Brent, a young millionaire he is drawn to. At the lodge he finds that other guests have reasons of their own for being there, among them Martin Krafft, who calls himself an author, and a man named Thompson. Milner overhears the two of them making plans and comes to believe those plans concern him.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about His Kind of Woman (1951)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Howard Hughes asked director Richard Fleischer to reshoot the film's ending; when Fleischer refused, Hughes offered him a million-dollar remake of his own B picture The Narrow Margin, and when Fleischer refused again, Hughes threatened to cancel that film's release until he relented.
  • Howard Hughes had the villain Nick Ferraro recast twice: Lee Van Cleef was replaced by Robert J. Wilke, and then, three-quarters through the reshoot, Hughes saw Raymond Burr in a film and ordered Ferraro's scenes shot a third time with Burr in the part.
  • Robert Mitchum nicknamed Jane Russell "Hard John" for her strict, straitlaced religious beliefs, and when a male reporter questioned them in light of her screen image, she replied, "Christians can have big breasts too."
  • On the penultimate day of shooting, during a fight scene, Robert Mitchum started a real fight with stunt men and wrecked the set and much of the stage's lighting and sound equipment.
  • Howard Hughes loved Vincent Price's character and demanded that director John Farrow expand the role; Farrow, believing he had delivered a completed film, refused to make Hughes' changes and left the production.
  • Howard Hughes added the sadistic plastic surgeon Martin Krafft, wrote all of Krafft's lines, recorded himself reciting them and sent the recordings to the production so the part would be played exactly as he envisaged.
  • The reshooting of His Kind of Woman cost about $850,000 in total, approximately the same amount of money the film lost in its initial 1951 release.
  • Filmmaker Brian De Palma tried to direct a remake of the film in the 2000s and 2010s, but it was never made because RKO refused to give up the rights.
