Plot summary
Colonel Lambeth's poor health prompts Rill, his daughter, to talk him into selling his Chicago meat-packing business and moving to the family's Texas cattle ranch; her fiancé, the lawyer Clyde Corbin, stays in Chicago. On the trail, cowboys Pecos Smith and Chito Rafferty ride up to the Lambeths' stagecoach and Pecos collects payment for cattle from Tex Evans, who rides shotgun. Bandits attack after the cowboys leave, and the wounded Tex says Sam Sawtelle shot him. In town, Rill hides her hair under a hat and dresses as a boy to be left alone. Sam's brother Brad raises a posse of vigilantes, and Pecos shoots Sam before they find him. The Lambeths get lost on the way to the ranch, and Pecos and Chito, who help them, are hired, though Pecos takes Rill for a boy.
