Plot summary
The Callum ranch in New Mexico takes in Jeb Rand, the sole survivor of a massacre that killed his family when he was a child. He remembers nothing of that night except images that return in nightmares, and Mrs. Callum raises him with her daughter Thor and her son Adam as one of her own. A shot fired at Jeb while he rides a colt is blamed on deer hunters. An old feud divides the Rands from the Callums, and Mrs. Callum's brother-in-law Grant wants Jeb dead. Grown now, Jeb loves Thor, but Adam grudges him his share of the ranch. When volunteers are called for the army in 1898, a coin toss decides which of the two men goes.
