Plot summary
In 1880, a drifter sits in on a five-card stud game in Rincon, a town 100 miles from Denver. The other players catch him cheating, and Nick Evers, the volatile one among them, leads the group in hanging him. Van Morgan speaks against the lynching but cannot stop it, and he leaves town. Word reaches him that the men from that game are being found dead, one after another, so he comes back. Rincon has also gained a new resident, the Reverend Jonathan Rudd, a stern Baptist preacher who carries a Colt .45. Morgan takes up with Lily Langford, who owns the barbershop, and tries to learn who is killing the players.
