Plot summary
Peter Hacker serves as the American ambassador to Israel, and he keeps one plan off the books: to bring young Jews and Muslims together for a peaceful dialogue. With Frank Stevenson, his head of security, he goes to a secret site in the Judaean Desert for talks with representatives of the Palestinian Liberation Organization. An armed Israeli helicopter finds the meeting and opens fire, causing several deaths. Hacker and Stevenson come through it alive and Israeli troops take them into custody. Defense Minister Eretz calls them in and restates his opposition to the peace effort. In Jerusalem, Alex Hacker, the ambassador's wife, is meeting her lover in secret; she is followed, and an unknown party films the two of them.

- Elmore Leonard was hired by Menahem Golan to adapt his 1974 novel 52 Pickup and set it in Tel Aviv. Leonard wrote two drafts, told Golan to get another writer, went uncredited, and says the finished film has nothing to do with his novel.
- The Ambassador was the first use of film rights to an Elmore Leonard novel. The same novel was adapted again in 1986 as 52 Pick-Up, directed by John Frankenheimer for Cannon Films.
