Plot summary
Victor Danemore, one of the world's richest men, dies suddenly at his estate on the French Riviera. Dave Bishop, who works for him, is asked over and over whether Danemore said anything before he died, and nobody is satisfied with that answer. Danemore's young wife of seven years knows nothing about her husband's past or how he made his fortune. A letter Danemore wrote eight years earlier, before he appeared on the international scene as a man of wealth and mystery, sits in the custody of a Viennese attorney. Bishop travels to Vienna to see it. His inquiries take him into a world of espionage and blackmail.
