Plot summary
Lucas Marsh has wanted to practice medicine since he was a boy and studies hard at medical school. His mother has died, and the money his alcoholic father squandered leaves nothing for his tuition. He marries Kristina Hedvigson, an older nurse with savings, who loves him while he feels little for her. Lucas clashes with physicians he judges incompetent and criticizes Alfred Boone, a wealthy friend. Kristina, Alfred and his mentor Dr. Aarons all try to show him that any doctor can make a mistake. His internship finished, he joins the busy rural practice of Dr. Dave Runkleman in Greenville, where many patients cannot pay.
