Plot summary
In 1922, revolution has left an unnamed country south of Mexico in chaos. Emmet Keogh, an Irish political assassin and patriot, is forced to haul a truckload of Scotch whiskey for Jennings, an English gunrunner. On the road he aids Father Oliver Van Horne, an American Catholic priest whose car has broken down. At the delivery point, Colonel Santilla's men have killed Keogh's contact and are threatening Chela, a mute Aymara woman. Van Horne turns a machine gun on the soldiers; he, Keogh and Chela run, and are taken. Santilla stages a mock execution, then makes an offer: kill Tomas de la Plata and be spared, with equal shares of $53,000 from Van Horne's suitcase. Keogh and Jennings enter de la Plata's territory posing as mining company employees.
