Douglas Fowley
Biography
Douglas Fowley was an American actor who appeared in hundreds of films and many television series. Born in the Bronx, he attended Los Angeles City College and supported himself as a singing waiter, a copy boy and a runner before turning to nightclubs and the stage. His first screen part came in 1933 in The Mad Game, with Spencer Tracy, and early on he usually played heavies or gangsters in low-budget pictures, among them Charlie Chan and Laurel and Hardy entries. He was best remembered as Roscoe Dexter, the exasperated director of Singin' in the Rain (1952), and for playing Doc Fabrique and then Doc Holliday on The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp. His other films included 20 Mule Team (1940), Battleground (1949), Mighty Joe Young (1949), The Naked Jungle (1954) and Walking Tall (1973). Later he played Andrew Hanks in the sitcom Pistols 'n' Petticoats.
