Burt Mustin
Biography
Burt Mustin was an American character actor who worked in radio and on the stage before turning to film and television. Born in Pittsburgh, he acted as an amateur, performing with the Pittsburgh Savoyards and the Pittsburgh Opera, and in 1921 he announced a variety show broadcast on KDKA, Pittsburgh's new radio station. After retiring to Tucson, he was spotted by director William Wyler in a stage production of Detective Story; Wyler cast him in the 1951 film version, and that same year he made his screen debut in The Last Outpost at age 67. Specializing in older men, he became one of the busiest elderly character actors. He appeared in such films as She Couldn't Say No and The Sheepman, and later in Mame and Baker's Hawk, his final film in 1976. On television he played recurring roles on Leave It to Beaver and Phyllis and guest starred widely, including two episodes of The Twilight Zone.
