Biography

Harry Carey Jr. was an American actor who grew up on his parents' ranch near Santa Clarita, California, the son of actor Harry Carey and actress Olive Carey. He became a respected character actor, working in Westerns and in four Howard Hawks films, among them Red River and Rio Bravo. He appeared in nine films with John Wayne, from Red River to Cahill U.S. Marshal, and nine with Ben Johnson. His later credits included Gremlins (1984), Mask (1985), The Whales of August (1987) and Back to the Future Part III (1990). 1. A change of course

Carey Jr. was a Pharmacist Mate 2nd Class, working as a medical corpsman, during his six years of United States Navy service in World War II. His time in the Navy included the Pacific War.

  2. A change of course

After he left the navy, Carey tried singing instead of acting, hoping to avoid that line of work, but the attempt did not succeed.

  3. A role that slipped away

Carey received a credit for Rio Bravo, though his scenes ended up cut. He guessed that Hawks disliked his outfit, or that the scene was cut because Carey called Hawks "Howard" rather than "Mr. Hawks".
