Plot summary

Sheridan City has seen fourteen killings and thirty-one robberies in a year. The marshal refuses to stand against the rancher Dade Holman, whose gang controls the town. Jeff Castle has been shot, but not fatally. Clint Tollinger arrives to speak with Nelly Bain, who will not see him. A resident knows him as a town tamer. The council pays him $500. He is deputized by the marshal. He tells the Harkness brothers, Holman's gunmen, to leave. He takes the pistol from "Frenchy" Lescaux, the saloon manager, and says no one may carry a weapon inside the town limits.
