Plot summary
In 1970s London, General Sternwood asks private detective Philip Marlowe to find out who is blackmailing him. At the mansion Marlowe meets the general's older daughter Charlotte, who is spoiled and inquisitive, and Camilla, the younger sister, who is wild. Marlowe looks into the pornographer Arthur Geiger and is led to Agnes, who works for Geiger, and to Joe Brody, the man she has fallen for. Camilla is found at the house where Geiger was killed, having posed there for nude photographs, and Marlowe takes her home. The gambler Eddie Mars owns that house. Mars's wife, Mona, has been absent for a time, and Charlotte's husband, Rusty Regan, is missing as well. Charlotte's gambling debts give Mars a hold over her, and Camilla wants her pictures back from Brody.
