Plot summary
Dick Ennis, a war correspondent, meets Major General Jack Lesley and is assigned to accompany the US Army Rangers in an attempt to outflank the enemy defenses at Anzio. The amphibious landing in 1944 is unopposed, but Lesley is cautious and fortifies his beachhead before advancing inland. Ennis and Pvt. Movie, a Ranger, drive through the countryside in a jeep and pick up Corporal Jack Rabinoff, a Black Devil. They discover that few German troops hold the ground between the beachhead and Rome, and Ennis's report of that gap is set aside. While the Allies hold their position, the German commander Kesselring gathers his forces for a counterattack.

- Peter Falk found the script so clichéd that he wanted off Anzio, so producer Dino De Laurentiis put Falk's name above the title and let him pick a writer for his character's dialogue; Falk stayed and wrote his lines himself.
- The character Rabinoff is based on a real 1st Special Service Force soldier, Sgt John L. "Jake" Walkmeister, who ran an illegal brothel of Italian prostitutes in a stolen ambulance and was killed by shrapnel at Port Cros during Operation Dragoon.
- A scene shot in the Colosseum was reported as "the biggest scene ever shot in Rome," involving some 3000 actors.
