Plot summary
The German occupation of Greece is at hand in 1941. Michael Morrison, a cynical American foreign correspondent, arrives in Athens and means to leave for London the next day. Before he can, he is tricked into carrying a list of Greek resistance leaders out of the country. Morrison commits the names on that list to memory and destroys the paper.

- Alan Ladd was meant to play the lead, but, as Robert Mitchum told it, the producers who drove out to Ladd's house found him shrunken from his swimming pool and decided he wouldn't do for the big war correspondent, so they asked Mitchum instead.
- Leon Uris did the first draft of the screenplay, but director Robert Aldrich had it rewritten by A.I. Bezzerides, who had written Kiss Me Deadly for Aldrich.
- Raymond Stross bought the film rights in England and said he wanted Clark Gable for the lead; he set the film up with MGM and New York's Cine World Productions and announced Robert Mitchum would star.
