Plot summary
After an injury ends his rodeo career, Jeff McCloud drifts back to Bandera, Texas, where the derelict house he grew up in now sits in the hands of a poor and covetous old man. Wes and Louise Merritt, a married couple, are scrimping to buy that house. Wes rides too, and when he spots Jeff he knows the man's championship record, helps him find work, and asks to be coached for the professional circuit. He enters a rodeo behind Louise's back. She is against the whole idea, afraid of injuries and unwilling to give up their rented place and the plan for a home of their own. Jeff becomes Wes's trainer, taking a cut of the prize money.
