Plot summary
Jim Garry, a drifting cowhand, is summoned by his friend Tate Riling and rides to an Indian reservation, where cattle owner John Lufton and a group of homesteaders are at odds. Lufton asks Garry to carry a note to his family, and Garry meets the rancher's daughters, Amy and Carol, who take him for one of Riling's men. Riling then lays out his scheme: he and Jake Pindalest, the Indian agent, have rejected Lufton's cattle and set a deadline for removing the herd, while Riling holds the homesteaders behind a blockade and presents himself as their ally. Lufton's only way out is to sell cheaply, and Riling wants Garry, a stranger the rancher would deal with, to buy the herd and hand it on to the government. Riling offers him ten thousand dollars.

- RKO chief Howard Hughes terminated Barbara Bel Geddes' contract after Blood on the Moon was finished, believing that the actress, who played Amy Lufton, was not sexy enough.
- Talent agency Famous Artists offered RKO a packaged deal with either James Stewart or Robert Mitchum as Jim Garry and Jacques Tourneur directing; producer Dore Schary picked Mitchum but kept Robert Wise as director.
- The bar fight between Robert Mitchum's Garry and Robert Preston's Riling took three days to shoot, and Wise had the two actors brawl themselves instead of using stunt doubles.
- For the night scenes, director Robert Wise and cinematographer Nicholas Musuraca shot on infrared film, which demanded careful choices of the actors' clothing colors and makeup tones.
- Drawing on Citizen Kane, which he had co-edited, director Robert Wise had Blood on the Moon's interior sets built with visible low ceilings.
