Plot summary
Cliff reaches Los Angeles, where his parents are not home and he meets his new neighbor, Helen Ingersoll. He heads for Scuffy's, once his favorite ice cream shop and now a bar, where his friend Pinky, a naval aviator, introduces him to Pat Ruscomb, a war widow. They are immediately attracted to each other. Bill, a former cowboy wounded at Iwo Jima, has a silver plate in his head. Perry Kincheloe, a legless double amputee and former boxer, lives with his mother and refuses to use his artificial legs.
