Plot summary
The gangster Vic Spilato faces a U.S. Senate investigation, and the hitman Cappy Gordon has killed his bookkeeper. Cappy's next job takes him toward San Cristóbal, a town in Latin America, where Spilato's estranged girlfriend, Clare Shepperd, has gone under the name Clare Sinclair. She sells a valuable pair of earrings to Felipe, a bar owner with old criminal ties to Spilato. The American prizefighter Russ Lambert arrives in the same town to recover from accidentally killing an opponent in the ring. Clare watches Lambert defeat the challenger Rivera, on whom she had bet, and finds herself drawn to him.

- Second Chance was RKO Radio's first foray into 3-D film, made during the 1950s 3-D fad and featuring the studio's top stars.
- Critic Bosley Crowther wrote that the screenplay was inspired by an aerial tramway accident in Rio de Janeiro around 1951, in which one man was killed trying to go for help by rope.
- Second Chance was also the first Hollywood 3-D feature to be shot in a foreign location, a distinction that set it apart from other early 3-D films.
