Plot summary
After the Korean War, Tony and Felix sail the Caribbean in the Ruby, a tramp boat they use for smuggling runs, with Jimmy Jean as their crewman. Miguel, the bartender who arranges their work, brings them an American businessman who needs to return to Detroit and wants Irena, a European woman he has been keeping company with, taken to another island. She has no passport, and the partners hesitate until he offers twelve hundred dollars. At sea Tony begins to fall for her. Felix, who knows what kind of woman she is, tells Irena to keep away from Tony, yet he is drawn to her himself.
