Biography

Ray Liotta was an American actor who grew up in New Jersey and studied acting at the University of Miami. After moving to New York City, he took the role of Joey Perrini on the soap opera Another World, a part he played from 1978 to 1981. His first major film role came in Something Wild (1986), and it brought him a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actor. He was best known as Shoeless Joe Jackson in Field of Dreams (1989) and as Henry Hill in Martin Scorsese's Goodfellas (1990). Later films included Unlawful Entry (1992), Cop Land (1997), Hannibal (2001), Narc (2002) and Marriage Story (2019). On television he won a Primetime Emmy Award for a guest role on ER and played Frank Sinatra in The Rat Pack, which earned him a Screen Actors Guild nomination. He also voiced Tommy Vercetti in the video game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. He died in 2022.

    Liotta studied acting at the University of Miami, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1978. At the university's Jerry Herman Ring Theatre, he appeared in musicals and plays such as Cabaret, Dames at Sea, Oklahoma and The Sound of Music.

    Ray Liotta made his Broadway debut in 2004 opposite Frank Langella in Stephen Belber's play Match, a performance The New York Times critic Ben Brantley called compelling but with little to work with.
