Plot summary
Los Angeles, 1959. Manny Singer writes advertising jingles and is bringing up his daughter Molly on his own after the death of his wife, Annie. Molly has stopped speaking. To keep the household running while he works, Manny takes on Corrina Washington as housekeeper and nanny, and she and the girl grow close. Corrina tells Molly that her mother lives in heaven, which the atheist Manny objects to. Corrina's relatives welcome Molly into their home, and the child begins attending church. At an office party Manny meets Jenny, a divorced mother of two, though he is still grieving and not ready for romance. Jevina, Corrina's sister, pushes her toward Anthony, but Corrina has no interest.
