Plot summary
Nick Twisp is a shy sixteen-year-old living in Oakland, California, with Estelle, his mother, and Jerry, her boyfriend. It is Jerry's sale of a defective car to some sailors that sends the three of them off to a trailer park in Clearlake. There Nick becomes smitten with Sheeni Saunders, a girl his own age who cares about French culture and likes the music he likes. Sheeni is going out with Trent Preston. Nick's gift of a dog, Albert, ends badly when the animal ruins the family's property and is no longer allowed in the house. Sheeni promises to line up work in Ukiah for Nick's father, George, and Nick undertakes to get himself thrown out of his mother's home so that he can return to her. In Oakland he invents an alter ego, François Dillinger.
