Plot summary
Blackway, a former sheriff's deputy who now leads the region's criminals, has been harassing Lillian since she came back to her Oregon logging hometown. The townspeople fear him and will not help her. After her cat is found decapitated, she reports it to the sheriff, who tells her to leave town. She refuses, and he sends her to Scotty, a man at the timber yard. Scotty is away, and the yard's owner and elderly workers repeat the advice to go. Joking, the owner offers a week's wages and burial costs to anyone who aids her. Lester, an old logger, accepts, and his protege Nate joins him. The three set out to look for Blackway, driving from place to place and speaking with people who know him.
