Plot summary
Garrison, a small New Jersey town, is home to New York City police officers who want a safe haven from the dangers of the city. Freddy Heflin, deaf in one ear since he rescued a woman from the Hudson River, could never join the NYPD, but he serves as the town's sheriff and looks up to the officers who live around him. Officer Murray Babitch is involved in a shooting on the George Washington Bridge, and Lieutenant Ray Donlan and his men move to shield him. Internal affairs investigator Moe Tilden presses a case against the precinct and asks Freddy for help.

- In a 2019 interview Stallone called Mangold “the best director I ever worked with”, but said the film worked in reverse: it was pretty good critically, yet it did not do a lot of box office, which fomented the opinion that he had had his moment and was going the way of the dodo bird and the Tasmanian tiger.
- The two deleted scenes primarily show the racism in the town of Garrison: one has all the resident police officers chasing down a pair of Black motorists, and the other has Heflin's deputy pointing out that most tickets issued in Garrison go to Black motorists on charges that suggest racial profiling.
- In May 1997 the film was accepted into the main competition at the Cannes Film Festival, but Miramax declined the invitation because re-shoots were still needed, including footage of Stallone 40 pounds heavier.
- Garrison is based on Mangold's hometown of Washingtonville, New York, about 60 miles from New York City; he grew up in a development called Worley Heights, where many of the residents were current and former NYPD police officers.
- The film had a record opening weekend for Miramax with a gross of $13.5 million, and eventually grossed $44.9 million in the United States and Canada and $63.7 million worldwide.
- In April 2026 a television series adaptation was announced at Paramount Television Studios and Miramax Television, with James Mangold returning to co-write, direct and executive produce the series alongside Robert Levine, who will serve as showrunner.
