Plot summary

Compulsive gambling has left Harry Collins, a Phoenix detective, deeply in debt to a local gangster called Chicago. He brings a young woman named Veronica to a poker game as a distraction, loses anyway, and drives her home. When he later seeks out her mother, Leila, to explain himself, her rebuke leads him to apologize, and the two begin a romance. Leila tells him that luck is his to make and that he should steer clear of the trouble he is in. Chicago then cuts him off from the bookies and gives him 48 hours to pay or murder Joey, a young suspect in custody. Rather than kill or default, Collins decides to rob Louie, a loan shark, and asks his partner Mike Henshaw and a fellow detective, James Nutter, to help.
