Plot summary
In 1972, Roberto Clemente is approaching the 3,000th hit of his Major League Baseball career. Mickey, a high school student in Los Angeles, wants to be at the game in Pittsburgh, and his younger brother Roger comes along. Roger has muscular dystrophy. The two drive across the country on a learner's permit, with their grandfather Poppy in the car, and their mother Marilyn follows them. Along the way, others they meet lend a hand, among them a person who has run away from home, the head of a motorcycle gang, a farmer and a doctor in an emergency room. The screenplay grew out of a real cross-country trip that two brothers made to see Clemente play.

- Producer Ryan Johnson gave the script to Ray Liotta's business agent, and Liotta, who said he could relate to it, asked for a part. His joining drew other actors into the production and made the filmmakers abandon their plan for a straight-to-DVD release.
- Bill Mikita started the screenplay in 1999 and wrote in Roberto Clemente's 3,000th hit because he and his brother Steve are major fans of the athlete. The film was based on the brothers' own cross-country trip to the game.
