Plot summary
Malcolm Rivers is convicted of several murders and scheduled to die, until his lawyer and psychiatrist bring new evidence to a midnight hearing and ask the judge to overturn the verdict. In the Nevada desert, a torrential rainstorm washes out the roads and traps ten travelers at a motel run by Larry. They include Ed, a former cop driving a limousine for the actress Caroline Suzanne; Paris, a prostitute; the newlyweds Lou and Ginny; George, his wife Alice, and his stepson Timmy; and Officer Rhodes, escorting the prisoner Robert Maine. Unable to leave and cut off from help, the guests start dying one by one, a motel room key left with each body, and the survivors look for the killer among themselves.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Identity (2003)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Mangold cast two actors he had worked with before: Pruitt Taylor Vince, who had played the lead in Mangold's feature film debut Heavy in 1995, took the role of serial killer Malcolm Rivers, and Clea DuVall, cast as Ginny, had played a psychiatric patient in his 1999 film Girl, Interrupted.
- In 2017 Mangold said he was very proud of the movie but noted its timing: Adaptation, which has a joke about someone with split personality, came out right before Identity.
- The majority of the film was shot on Stage 27 at Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City, with Mangold estimating that "95% of the film" was shot on constructed sets, and production designer Mark Friedberg built a motel with a swimming pool, 14 rooms and surrounding desert under endless rain.
- Angelo Badalamenti was originally signed to score the film, but his music was replaced with a new score by Alan Silvestri.
- Cooney's screenplay for Identity was inspired by Agatha Christie's 1939 whodunit And Then There Were None, and principal photography took place largely on studio sets in Culver City, California in 2002, with location photography occurring in Palmdale.
