Plot summary
Dr. David Krane, a medical examiner in Seattle, has never stopped looking for the person who killed his wife Mary. A robbery at a drug store leaves a woman dead, and at the scene Krane finds a matchbook like one recovered where Mary died; he becomes certain that one killer is responsible for both crimes. Dr. Martha Briggs has developed a serum that carries memories from one person to another through samples of cerebrospinal fluid. Krane asks to take part in her work, and she refuses. He takes a sample of Mary's spinal fluid from her autopsy and lets himself into Briggs's office, then injects the serum at home and sees a piece of the night of the murder, though the killer's face stays hidden. Briggs warns him about the damage the serum can do.
