Plot summary
With their comeback behind them, the Muppets are unsure what to do next until a new manager, Dominic Badguy, proposes a world tour. Unknown to them, Badguy answers to Constantine, a criminal frog who is Kermit's double. Constantine has just broken out of a Siberian Gulag, and the tour is meant to be cover for a string of heists. In Berlin, Constantine ambushes Kermit, marks him with a fake mole and has him sent to the Gulag in his place, then takes over as the troupe's leader. There Kermit's escape attempts are blocked by Nadya, the prison guard, who puts him in charge of an inmate talent show. Meanwhile, Interpol's Jean Pierre Napoleon and Sam Eagle of the CIA investigate the robberies that follow the Muppets across Europe.

- Green screen was unusable for Muppets Most Wanted because its shade of green clashed with Kermit the Frog, so the visual effects team shot the digital compositing scenes against blue screens instead, a color that also suited Sam Eagle.
- Christoph Waltz was the first actor attached to Muppets Most Wanted, cast as an Interpol inspector; he dropped out over scheduling conflicts and was replaced by Ty Burrell, though Waltz still appeared in a cameo as himself.
- The Tower of London, whose owner the Crown Estate rarely grants permission to film there, was among the film's London shooting locations.
- James Bobin became the only person besides Brian Henson to have directed two Muppets films, when he followed The Muppets with Muppets Most Wanted.
