Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Set in New York and Pennsylvania, Local Color was actually shot in Louisiana, in and around New Orleans, Covington and Baton Rouge. The crew stayed in two different hotels to avoid delays, and wrapped only eight days before Hurricane Katrina without interruption.
- George Gallo wrote and directed the film from his own experience at 18. The character Nicholai Seroff was based on George Cherepov, the painter Gallo apprenticed under in the 1970s.
- Gallo painted all the oil paintings in the film, cleaning out his whole garage of them. The canvases Trevor Morgan's John shows Armin Mueller-Stahl's Seroff are the exact paintings Gallo had shown George Cherepov as a teenager.
