Plot summary
Mason Verger, the only one of Hannibal Lecter's victims to survive, has spent years planning to torture and kill him. Left paralyzed and disfigured by Lecter, Verger uses his wealth and political connections to get Starling assigned to Lecter's case, hoping she will lure him out of hiding. Starling has been disgraced by a drug raid that left five people dead. A Justice Department official, Paul Krendler, helps Verger and is upset that Starling rebuffed him. When Lecter learns of her disgrace, he writes to her from Florence, where he is living as a library curator called Dr. Fell. A perfume expert links the scent on the letter to a skin cream stocked by only a few shops.
