Plot summary
Federal agents have spent years taking apart the Mafia, and few bosses remain, among them the ailing Primo Sparazza. To build a case against him, the FBI wants Buddy "Aces" Israel, a Las Vegas headliner who performs card tricks, to turn informant in exchange for witness protection. While watching Sparazza, agents Richard Messner and Donald Carruthers learn that he has ordered a $1 million contract on Israel, with the job given to a Swede who is also expected to deliver a piece of Israel's heart. Israel has jumped bail and is hiding in a penthouse suite at a Lake Tahoe hotel. With that money waiting, other assassins and a team of bail bondsmen are hunting him.

- Michael Shannon was originally cast as Darwin Tremor, but Joe Carnahan fired him after he was rude to a costumer during a pre-production meeting. Carnahan then cast Chris Pine within 10 seconds of his audition, praising the levity and humor Pine brought to the scene with his physical reaction.
- Carnahan's on-set photographer captured over 3,000 stills during the making of the film. They went to the London-based studio VooDooDog, which found sequential photographs that could be animated into the title sequences, then manipulated the images in After Effects to control camera movement and depth of field.
