Plot summary
Barry B. Benson, an idealistic honey bee who can talk with humans, is about to enter Honex Industries with his best friend, Adam Flayman, until he learns a bee's job never changes once chosen. The two meet the Pollen Jocks, bees who gather pollen outside the hive, and Barry joins an expedition to Manhattan, where rain leaves him in the apartment of the florist Vanessa Bloome. Her boyfriend Ken tries to kill him, and Vanessa catches Barry and releases him outdoors. Barry returns to thank her, breaking the law that bees must not communicate with humans, and the two become friends. In a grocery store he finds shelves of honey and learns humans have eaten it for centuries. He sets out for Honey Farms, which supplies the store, and decides to sue the human race, with Vanessa's help.

- The film faced two lawsuits: Swedish animation students argued their 2000 concept called Beebylon was too similar, and Florida cosmetics company Beeceuticals sued over the trademarked phrase "Give Bees a Chance"; both cases were settled.
- In November 2016 YouTube user Avoid at All Costs uploaded "The entire bee movie but every time they say bee it gets faster", which speeds the film up at every mention of the word, condensing it to seven minutes; the video amassed twelve million views.
- Bee Movie exists because Steven Spielberg approached DreamWorks Animation co-founder Jeffrey Katzenberg in 2003 after Jerry Seinfeld personally asked Spielberg to make an animated film about insects.
