Plot summary
Tommy Zelda has spent three years in prison for movie piracy, a charge he took the fall for on behalf of a more dangerous partner. Paroled, he is collected by his older sister Viki, who brings him to her home so he can rebuild his life. The family has told Tommy's grandmother, whose heart is weak, that he was in France, and Viki's husband Ed asks when he might go back. Tommy's former partner Gray appears at dinner and Viki runs him off. The following day his parole officer, Angela Papadopolous, orders him to take a job at Pirate Burger, a pirate-themed restaurant, though he would rather revive his father's painting business.

- Before the film's release, Tim Allen took an 8-city, 10-day preview tour called "Stand Up and Show It," opening with a standup routine followed by a screening. He later suggested the concept may not have worked out because he was too funny ahead of the light comedy.
- Tim Allen financed Crazy on the Outside himself, and got directing advice from Kevin Costner, Barry Sonnenfeld and Francis Ford Coppola. Costner, who had financed his own films, advised Allen on how to direct it and how to put it out into distribution.
