Plot summary
In Schenectady, carnival stunt rider Luke Glanton calls on his former lover Romina Gutierrez and learns that her son Jason is his. Romina lives with Kofi Kancam and doubts Luke can support a family. Luke leaves the carnival to stay near them and takes part-time work with auto mechanic Robin Van Derk Hook, who once robbed banks and now proposes the two of them do it together. Luke robs banks at gunpoint. In the same city, Avery Cross is a rookie police officer balancing the job with his wife Jennifer and their baby son A.J., in a department ruled by the corrupt detective Peter Deluca.

- Hurricane Irene hit Schenectady during the shoot and flooded the equipment trucks; the crew paddled a canoe out to the trucks to rescue the film footage left inside and were filming again the next day.
- Almost nothing was a set. Derek Cianfrance used real banks, police stations, a hospital, a high school and a town fair, and the extras were the real bank tellers, police officers, hospital patients and students who worked or studied there.
- Ryan Gosling learned to ride a motorcycle for the part, trained with stuntman Rick Miller for two months and did many of his own stunts; one getaway through heavy traffic needed 22 takes, and he put on 40 pounds of muscle.
- Cinematographer Sean Bobbitt shot the opening globe of death by standing inside the sphere with the riders, until one of the motorcycles hit his head and gave him concussion; Cianfrance never let him back in.
- The film carries a disclaimer saying its events are entirely fictitious, yet critics have tied its police corruption to a real 2002 case in which five Schenectady officers, among them former police chief Gregory Kaczmarek, were indicted over a local narcotics ring.
