Plot summary
Charlie St. Cloud and his younger brother Sam win a boating race on Charlie's sailboat, the Splendid Splinter, and the victory brings Charlie a sailing scholarship to Stanford. After graduation he promises Sam that they will practice baseball together every day until he goes to Stanford. Then a crash on the road kills Sam. After the funeral Charlie goes into the woods and finds Sam's spirit, and the brothers keep the promise, meeting at sunset to play catch. Five years later Charlie has given up the scholarship and works as a caretaker at Waterside Cemetery, where he talks with the dead. When a high school classmate, Tess Carroll, comes home to prepare a solo voyage around the world, Charlie grows close to her while still keeping his appointment with Sam.
