Plot summary
Jerilee Randall lives in the San Fernando Valley and is still in high school when she wins a trophy for a piece of creative writing. At a party not long after, she meets Walt, the son of the screenwriter Walter Thornton, and she goes along with him and some of his friends, drawn by the chance to meet his father. At the Thorntons' pool, Joe Heron, a friend of Walt's, sexually assaults her. Walter arrives and saves her from further attacks. Friendship, and then a love affair, grow between Jerilee and Walter, and they marry although her mother, Veronica, disapproves. Jerilee's first book, once published, becomes a bestseller.

- The Lonely Lady was nominated for 11 Golden Raspberry Awards and won six at the 4th ceremony, including Worst Picture, Worst Actress for Pia Zadora and Worst Director for Peter Sasdy; Zadora said she "would have hated to be nominated and not won."
- Susan Blakely, who had signed a three-picture pay-or-play contract with Universal, accepted the role of Jerilee Randall but opted out of the project after never being satisfied with the script by Robert Merrill and Dean Riesner.
- Harold Robbins said he had not seen the film and criticized the casting of Pia Zadora, predicting everyone would lose money except him: he had already received $600,000 before it opened.
- The film's Los Angeles landmarks, from the exterior of the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion to local supermarkets, were built at a villa near Rome where principal photography began on June 14, 1982.
