Plot summary
Jake Green served a prison term for a crime ordered by Dorothy Macha, the crime boss who owns a casino in an unnamed city. Two years after his release, Jake and his brother Billy walk into that casino to collect a debt Jake believes Macha owes them; Billy is reluctant to be there. Macha summons the brothers to the floor above, where wealthy players are gambling. Jake loses a fortune on a chip toss, then draws Macha into the same wager and wins, humiliating a man who wins only because others are afraid to beat him. Macha tells Paul, his right-hand man, to have Jake killed. Outside, a loan shark named Zach offers Jake help. Jake collapses in a stairwell and is rushed to a hospital, where doctors say his test results will take a few days.

- Reviews were so poor in the UK that a positive quote on the film's poster, saying the director was "back to his best" and attributed to The Sun, in fact came from a promotional section of the Sun's website created and paid for by a public-relations agency on behalf of the film's distributors.
- After criticism that the film was too hard to follow, Ritchie re-edited it, so two versions exist: the original 2005 theatrical release on Region 2 and the 2007 re-edit on Region 1, made to simplify and clarify some plot points.
- Guy Ritchie first intended the music to follow his previous crime movies, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch, using classical source tracks, but during production he changed his mind and scored a majority of the film with original music.
- The number 32 comes up repeatedly: the Temple of Solomon was chequered like a chessboard, which has 64 squares and 32 pieces, and the lift that Jake enters near the end of the movie has buttons for 32 floors.
- The three central characters carry Hebrew-derived names with a meaning: Zach, Jake and Avi are representative of Kabbalistic right, center and left pillar energies respectively.
