Plot summary
Charlie Barber runs a theater company in New York City, and Nicole, his wife, is the actress his productions usually star. Their marriage is in difficulty, so they visit a mediator, who asks each of them to set down on paper what they value in the other. Nicole finds she cannot read hers aloud, and counseling ends there. Then a television pilot in Los Angeles offers Nicole a leading part. She quits the company, takes their son Henry, and goes to stay with her mother in West Hollywood. Charlie remains in New York, where his play is transferring to Broadway, and he assumes the arrangement is only temporary. The two have promised to separate without lawyers, yet a producer pushes Nicole toward Nora Fanshaw, a family lawyer with a high profile.
