Biography

Glenn Ford was a Canadian-born American actor who became one of Hollywood's biggest box-office draws during the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s. Born in Sainte-Christine-d'Auvergne, Quebec, he moved to California as a child and acted in West Coast stage companies before joining Columbia Pictures in 1939. He had his first major film role in Heaven with a Barbed Wire Fence (1939). Ford was known for playing ordinary men caught in unusual situations, and key parts came in Gilda (1946) and The Big Heat (1953), two film noirs, and in the high-school drama Blackboard Jungle (1955). He starred in the Western 3:10 to Yuma (1957), in comedies such as Pocketful of Miracles (1961), for which he won a Golden Globe, and later as Jonathan Kent in Superman (1978). Five of his films were chosen for the National Film Registry. He also starred as Sheriff Cade in the television series Cade's County. Ford died in 2006.

    Ford's first major movie part came in Heaven with a Barbed Wire Fence, a 1939 film made at 20th Century Fox studios and written by Dalton Trumbo.

  2. A change of course

    While he was in high school, Ford took odd jobs. One of them was for Will Rogers, a comedian and entertainer, who taught him horsemanship.

    Ford was listed as the top box office champion in 1958 by Quigley's Annual List of Top Ten Box Office Champions.

  4. First role

    In 1971, Ford made a deal with CBS for his first TV series, a half-hour comedy/drama called The Glenn Ford Show. CBS head Fred Silverman then proposed a Western instead, and Cade's County was the result.
